The Xiaomi Mi 6, which has arguably been one of the most anticipated devices of 2017 is now official. The smartphone has reportedly faced a lot of delays due to Snapdragon 835 procurement issues and comes at a time when smartphones like the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8 are revolutionising smartphone design.
Thankfully, the Mi 6 delivers on its promise and features an all-new design which does not follow in the footsteps of the Galaxy S8 but comes with its own distinct identity. Xiaomi has left no stone un-turned with the Mi 6 and it comes with powerful hardware and promising new features.
We take a closer look:
The Xiaomi Mi 6 is powered by Qualcomm’s latest processor – the Snapdragon 835. The 10nm processor is 35 percent smaller and 25 percent more efficient than its predecessor. With this, the Mi 6 has joined an elite league of smartphones having the SD 835 chipset.
The smartphone comes with 6GB of RAM ( DDR4X 64 bit dual-channel memory) as standard across all variants along with 64/128GB of internal storage and a 3,350mAh battery. Xiaomi claims that the battery can easily last a day thanks to certain battery-saving tricks in MIUI such as freezing background data from running the background, restricting errant applications from starting up and so on.
During the launch event, Xiaomi claimed that the Mi 6 has a AnTuTu score of 184,292. While we will have to restrict our judgement till we get our hands on the device, on paper the Xiaomi Mi 6 looks mightily impressive in the specifications department.
The Mi 6 features a 5.15-inch 1080p display, which has a brightness of 600 nits and features 4096 levels of backlight adjustment. The display’s brightness goes all the way down to 1 nit in order to alleviate eye strain at night.
The Xiaomi Mi 6 comes with a dual camera setup at the rear – a 12MP wide-angle sensor with 4-axis optical image stabilisation and a 12MP telephoto lens. Just like on the iPhone 7 Plus, the telephoto lens allows for 2X optical lossless zoom which exists along with the 10X digital zoom. On the front, there is an 8MP camera for selfies.
On the connectivity front, the Xiaomi Mi 6 supports 4G + networks with up to 600Mbps download and 100Mbps upload speeds and comes with a 2×2 dual Wi-Fi system. The Mi 6 also comes with NFC on board and is compatible with with Xiaomi’s Mi Pay mobile payment service.
All new design
Xiaomi has not followed in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 in equipping the Mi6 with a bezel-less design. Instead, the smartphone is encased in four-sided curved 3D glass. It comes with a stainless steel frame sandwiched between two layers of glass (on the front and back).
On the specifications front, the Xiaomi Mi 6 comes with the Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 3,350mAh battery
Xiaomi claims that the frame has a polish which takes 12 days and over 40 different processes to achieve. The Mi 6 also comes with a perfectly symmetrical design. Examples of the same can be seen in how the antenna lines are aligned to the display and the SIM card slot is aligned with the volume keys.
R.I.P headphone jack
Xiaomi has followed in the footsteps of the iPhone 7 and removed the headphone jack from the Mi 6. Audio is routed via the USB Type-C port which is also used for charging and data transfer.
The Xiaomi Mi 6 also comes with certain unique features such as:
Fingerprint sensor underneath the front glass
The fingerprint sensor of the Xiaomi Mi 6 is embedded underneath the glass in front. The sensor is not embedded underneath the display as Apple is rumoured to do with the iPhone 8, but is underneath the front glass layer.
The Mi 6 comes in a premium silver edition which features an ultra-reflective mirror finish and silver four-sided 3D curves. Xiaomi also has a ceramic version of the Mi 6 on offer which comes with a four-sided curved ceramic body.
It is extremely resistant to wear and tear and comes with a hardness level of 8 Mohs. This premium variant also features camera rims made out of 18-karat gold.
The Xiaomi Mi 6 is splash resistant with all openings, including the SIM tray sealed and protected from splashes of water
